The first thing I would check is what version of Excel was the file being sent created in, and what version of Excel is trying to open it.

wilcc, MS dropped the office toolbar in 2003. Don't know why but my guess is it had to do with memory issues since each shortcut on the toolbar was actually an open and running file.

You may want to check the BIOS settings and see if there is a "temperature shutdown" thats turned on. If so then its doing its job and you know where the problem is.

Yes they work on the Compaq machine and its plugged into the correct socket, and no they are not powered by an adaptor. I checked and no driver updates are available except for W95,W98, & ME. Thought I'd try them before buying a new set. Thanks for the feedback.
