The work-around described is all I ever found. Since my previous post, there has been either one or zero e-mails exhibiting the problem, so I've quit looking for a better, "proper" fix. Hang in there.
Easier: Just double-clicking the .msg file causes it to open in a regular Outlook e-mail window. No need to search through lots of garbage characters in Notepad.

A work-around found somewhere, maybe Google forums?
Open the (invisible) reply, "Save As" in .msg format, and open that in Notepad. Search among the funky characters for the actual reply message text. Awkward, but better than not seeing the message at all.
