Ever since I upgraded to VMWare 10, I occasionally notice that the VM has taken a random drive letter to assign itself. This is a problem because my H drive, an external WD MyBook, is mapped to some programs that require data on that drive. I am 99% sure that this mysterious CD drive that shows...
Thanks for the links you sent, but the crucial step I can't get to work is not fully explained. There is a round plastic ring that is supposed to slip over the cpu cooler head from below and secure it to the mounting bracket so it can't fall off the cpu. All they say is ' clip it to the CPU...
Feeling rambunctious, I decided to upgrade to the AMD black FX 8150 core and a new mobo. It arrives in a huge box with a liquid cooling system designed for it. Wonderful. I take out the "instructions" that were obviously not written by a human being (all pictures). Spent an hour researching the...
Thanks for the link, but that only states the board can take a maximum of 16 gig and it has 4x slots. My issue is the manual that came with the board says you may install 1,2 or 4 gig sticks. I was hoping maybe the manual was out of date and it could take an 8 gig stick. I guess to be safe I'll...
I was just going to move over my 2 4gig sticks, as I know these boards love the "dual channel" thing. This is a new board I bought to go with the 8 core cpu, so I figured I might as well up to 16 gig mem and forget about it for another 5 yrs. The manual says it needs 4 x 2gig sticks but I find...
Thank you all for your responses. Luckily I went back and reviewed the specs on that 8 core and realized it's an AM3+ socket and will not fit my existing mobo. [mad] Now I have to decide whether to just get a newer board to go with the cpu (and reinstall everything) or just be happy with what I...
Hello,
I know it's not a good idea to try and use the existing HD if upgrading to a new mobo, but can anyone think of a reason I can't use the HD if I only upgrade the cpu and go into BIOS first time I power back up? I found a really good deal on an AMD 8 core and would like to upgrade, but...
Good day everyone.
I recently discovered that the Apps folder I created in All Programs area of my start menu has lost all of its programs. The programs are physically still on the drive in Program Files (86) but can not be launched from the start menu now. I have always tried to organize the...
I am prepping an older tower I bought used for some s\w testing that never got off the ground. :( Currently there is no OS on the HD, but booting from a CD should work, although since I can't see anything I have no idea if it's even complaining. At least it does give a POST beep. (!)
The video...
Windows 7 is so much fun. After my partner joined his new laptop to our home network, I am now getting entries like this in Event Viewer:
The master browser has received a server announcement from the computer ASUSN61 that believes that it is the master browser for the domain on transport...
The board is brand new and has the latest ASUS bios so I can rule that out. Here's the Catch-22: it's the 64-bit Reliability updates that are refusing to install. I'm down to 4.. the original 19 or so would go in one at a time. The only optional updates showing are language packs. Does anyone by...
Thanks for the starting point. At least now Windows no longer thinks it has to install updates that are going to fail.
There is a significant problem to resolve now as I'm down to 6 x64 updates that fail, Windows media player update fails, and I don't dare to even look at SP1. To see log files...
So, after rebuilding my system twice and getting my 7Ultimate box up and running, today I get an announcement that 19 updates are ready. Fine. I uncheck SP1 and try to update the rest of the innocent x64 updates. Bad decision. They failed, Windows would not reboot (failed to start, failed to...
Thanks tlcscousin!! You hit the nail exactly. For whatever reason the system decided it would be fun to move the disk order making the boot disk invalid. I ususally keep the cd as the first boot device but I guess I can always switch it if I need to boot from a diag disc or something. Anyway, the...
Maybe this board is just too new and I don't understand it, but the user guide certainly is no help.
New board, new psu, new ram. Disk 0 (SATA1)is fine and windows 64bit installed perfectly. SATA2 is the dvd player. All my data is on a second SATA drive and no matter how I configure BIOS or plug...
Thank you everyone for the advice. Back when I was building 286 boxes and windows 3 I wouldn't even think of trying it, but hardware is much better than before so it was worth asking!
The old board is the M4a78t-e. The new board is the M4A88TD-V EVO/USB3 880G R. Sometimes the symptom looked...
I've searched a hundred threads, Google stuff, etc.
My existing Asus M4a78t-e has never been a happy camper since I bought it 3 months ago. Windows 7 64bit on a compatible AM3 cpu... it keeps rebooting, blue screen... have to repair boot up. No consistent way to repro. So, I am getting a newer...
I'm assuming this is OS related, not hardware, so I'm asking here. After installing a PCI TV card I've noticed that I'm hearing regular disk access, either read or write, that wasn't around before. (I listen for these things!)
Just wondering if there is a software program that will visually...
I still get physical DVD's delivered for my MSDN subscription. Most of them are ISO files, and burning them to disc (Nero) gives me a full install of XP, but the disc is not bootable, whereas the OEM version is. Does this help?
