I was having this problem, first occured when installing directx9. after trying to deal with it for a while, ended up swapping processor and fixed the problem.
This screen was seen under win98, I havent seen it myself under XP... but in any case, when I was running 98, i edited this "shut down" screen (I believe that's the name) to show the text that I wanted. I believe that your only hope to doing what you want, is to find this file & print it out...
seems to me his best choice is to set the new hd as bootable, format & install the os... then rename the old hd & transfer his files. if you install the program on the new hd prior to formatting & installing the os, it's just gonna have to be reinstalled later, losing all info. He's trying to...
Had this problem as well - actually a couple of different error message BSD's - turned out it was my AMD processor - may have overheated. Moral to this story appears to be that these error messages can come from any number of sources...
