If you don't want to disable the feature of capitalizing the first letter of every sentence, but just want to selectively do it you can do an Undo (Ctrl+z) immediately after the letter is automatically capitalized. However the undo feature only works when you actually see it automatically...
Have you tried doing Tools, Options, select the Compatibility tab, then clicking the Font Substitution button? This will allow you to choose which font to use as a substitute for a particular font if that font isn't on your system.

An even easier way to get rid of the grey lines is to turn off Gridlines in Excel before copying. To do this select Tools, Options then the View tab. De-select Gridlines. Now copy the items from Excel and paste into PowerPoint and no lines at all will show.
