Thank you to all who replied. Oddly enough the "solution" came about when the file system was converted from FAT32 to NTFS. No other changes to the system, user privilege etc. Just Microsoft "Magic" in action!
I have a new install of IIS v5 on Win2k Server w/Service Pack 1. When I try to display .asp pages I get the http 500, Internal Server error.
If I specify in "tools/internet options - address" my machine name and start page as "richs-laptop//10100CMS_info1.htm", it works...
