So i would say that if you rewired the ends of your new cable runs then you can put GigE...

Don't forget to restart your FTP server after you change the config file.

add this line to your vsftp config file located in /etc/vsftpd/vsftpd.conf
chroot_local_user=YES
try that and see if it works. That is what is in my FTP config file

I have a mysql database on a windows machine that i use for my website. But i built a new linux box running RH9 and now need to move my DB over to the new box. I have setup phpMyAdmin on both machines, So i exported the proper DB but when i restore it on the linux box it doesn't restore...
Go under your internet options Tools->Internet Options and under the connections tab make sure that if your VPN connection is listed under Dial-up and VPN connections that the "Always Dial my Default connection" is not check. or it ill try and use your VPN connection to connect to the internet...
So what im getting from this is that whe you connect the external HDD your PC crashes. What it could be is that maybe something in the original PC crash damaged either the USB2.0 drivers or the USB port itself.
Have you tried to plug a different USB HDD into that port.(if accessible to one)...
