Erm, not the problem I was thinking of.
There is no PDC/BDC on the wireless subnet (10.0.2.*) only on the office subnet (10.0.0.*).
When I logon on the wireless subnet it tries to find a DC by broadcast which obviously doesn't propogate to the other subnet.
I know you can fix this with an...
Thanks again .... as a small aside (see, you shouldn't be so helpful) will this also resolve the issue of finding a PDC/BDC on a different subnet to the one the client is on.
At the moment it's saying a domain controller can't be found, but re-establishes all the shares ok anyway.
Ta (again)
Thanks for that.
Just as an aside, LMHOSTS doesn't give me browse lists and WINS resolution does work without the overhead of distributing files...
As to your questions/hints:
Do we need subnets? Well, I don't want them but I don't see how to do without them - it may just be that I should...
When the system fails to ping, run nbtstat -c and see whether the name/ip are in the cache and correct. Will tell you whether the dns lookup is working/has worked.
Also arp -a will tell you if the system still knows the MAC address.
I'd also run IpConfig /Renew on the client, then retry the...
Assuming the DNS/DHCP services are running on something like Win2003, I would first of all run IPCONFIG /All on the client(s) to check the DHCP and DNS server IP addresses are what you expect them to be.
Are all your clients on the same OS, and same patch level? MS have recently issued DHCP...
Thanks for the replies ... extra info is as follows.
1) We are running various windows servers and PC's. Our unix and macs are minimal and not relevant to this discussion.
2) We're using netgear stuff mostly FR328S routers. The WAP Routers (which are the one we want to broadcast through) are...
Have just split the network up so the wireless lan is on a different subnet. Now have all the usual problems associated with NetBios naming.
Is there a way I can make the wireless router pass broadcast messages between the subnets and so avoid having to change over to Wins/DNS (as most of our...
