i guess i'm not following....do i type in :set all before i vi a file or while i'm already in a file?

this didn't help . still getting same error.

the line numbers did not show this happens for all users in any directory

when i do the following vi ~/.exrc this opens a blank file

no there is nothing strange in .exrc any other suggestions.....
