I just figured out a solution. In my script, I performed a find on the serial number I created for each record first. Then on the import command, I selected to only update current found records set.
If theres a better way do let me know though,

Just to clairfy what you wrote;
I created a field and called it "Item Number Found". It is a Number type field.
This is the field that list each record number in the found set as I browse through them.
