Yes, its the same PC. I got frustrated, so I took a break and now I'm back at it again. I'm going to try to clear the CMOS by removing the battery for a minute and then powering it up. I think it may be the motherboard, because I've tried just about everything else that I could possibly think of.
hmmmmm - the Knoppix idea didn't work either. I even tried to format the hard drive, but it still can't find it. So basically I can't do anything until this computer finds the hard drive. (if it ever does) Any suggestions?
I bought a boot disk that's suppose to boot any computer and it still won't work. I am at a loss. Maybe I'll just try using Knoppix to see if that works. I'll have to get back to everyone when I'm done - thanks.
I just contacted HP and I'm waiting for a reply in regards to the motherboard. I contacted them earlier about the system restore disk, but they say its no longer available. The O/S is Windows Me. (try not to laugh too hard) I tried just about everything except replacing the motherboard. This may...
Couldn't find that utility you mentioned for the motherboard on that site, but I don't really know what I'm looking for either. I know the hard drive and cables are good, because they work on my other computer. I even bought the Amazing Boot Disk, It's suppose to boot any computer with or...
I even un-hooked the CD-RW & the DVD - no luck. I also tried plugging in the cable on the board where the CD & DVD went - no luck. I guess I'm getting desperate, because I'm trying all kinds of crazy things. I'm not sure what to do next, I think I'm just gonna pack it away for now. Maybe I'll...
Its an HP Pavillion 7960, so I had to hit F1 to get into the BIOS. I did try to set the Primary Master on Auto, but it didn't make a difference. When I set it for User HDD it gave me an option screen, (press F1 for set up or press F2 to continue) I pressed F2 to continue, then it said "disk boot...
The drive is the same size as the one I took out - 40G. I'm not sure how old it is, because it was given to me. All I know is its a Pentium 4 1300MHz RDRAM clock 300MHz. It tells me the original drive fails, but it doesn't see the replacement drive. Sorry, but I don't know how to get it to...
My computer won't boot up. "It says primary master fails" I replaced the cable - no luck. I replaced the Harddrive - no luck. Any suggestions would be greatly appreciated.
Jeeeeeez, sorry if I offended anyone on here. I'm new to this and posted where I thought I should. I'm not an expert like you people are. I'll find another way, sorry to bother you. Maybe I'll try the hardware forum you so kindly pointed me to. Maybe you should work on your people skills!
Thanks you all for responding, I do appreciate it. I tried replacing the cable and the harddrive, but still no go. The battery is fine and the clock is correct. It doesn't seem to be able to find the hard drive. I may have to disconnect the other drives and try again. Oh well, back to the old...
Yes F1 let's you into the BIOS - No, there wasn't a hardware problem - I just got the computer, because it was being thrown out - My guess is that it happened to them and they just threw it out. I can only assume that it worked at one time, its in great shape and its not very old. Its an HP...
When I start up my PC, it runs post and asks to press F1 for set-up or F2 to continue. I press F2 to continue and it asks for a boot disk. I went to the internet and downloaded a Windows Me boot disk, but now it says invalid system disk. Can anyone help me?
Thanks for pointing me in the right direction. I figured it was a proprietary issue, that's why I went out and bought another hard drive. Silly me, I assumed this would resolve the problem. I thought starting with a clean hard drive would eliminate any hidden partition problems, but no such...
I have a Compaq Presario 5000Z desktop. I bought a new hard drive to practice installations with, like Windows 2000 Pro, Windows XP Pro, etc. The problem is Compaq will not allow the O/S's to be installed (like XP), or they do so with all kinds of errors an conflicts (2000 Pro). Since it came...
Through the process of elimination, I found a working driver and now have 16bit color & 800X600 res. I was trying not to spend any money on it, because I'll probably give it to my mom - she never had a PC. I still have some things I want to do with it, but other than that - there is nothing...
Yes it is shared memory, so I was able to change that back in the CMOS to 4MB's. I tried numerous generic drivers with no luck. It was an old PC I bought from a computer show many years, not a brand name PC. I found a CD-ROM with drivers on it, but I haven't been able to figure out which ones to...
I just revived an old PC I had stored in the basement. I ran fdisk from the boot disk and re-installed the O/S. My problem is now I only have 16 colors, I had more options before. The video memory says 1MB, I was sure it had 4MB before I worked on it. How do I change the video memory so It can...
