How to delete odd-named files (eg. a file called ~!)
Questions for you: What is the real name of this file? Does ls -bl show a different name? I can delete ~! from within sh as well as ksh. For troublesome files, I create a shell script from ls -b. file permissions
You don't state why you want your user's files to be executable. If a user is creating executable files (scripts and programs) he/she should first learn the chmod command. unix never "assumes" that a file is executable. -

The big question: how are you connected to the outside world, i.e., does the modem go through a switch or is it a dedicated outside line? -
