More info.. The problem looks to be WMSDE. The installation happens so fast I didn't see it the first time. During the installation of WMSDE, it gets down to 3 seconds and then the installation backs out completely. STS doesn't uninstall, just WMSDE. The event viewer has an info (not an error)...
