Just a thought: that has happened to me before and it was either a bad disk or a bad drive. It happens less often when I use original OEM media instead of a backup copy with a label on it (since stopped using sticky paper labels on CD backups). So maybe you need new disk(s); try buffing it up...
Terminal services is built-in to Windows XP so all you have to do is right-click on "My Computer" and go to the Remote tab to set it up. You'll need to allow connections from outside on port 3389 (you may need to create a rule in your router or an exception in the XP Pro firewall).
