B.M. If you are publishing to a hosting server on the internet somewhere via ftp, the host server will typically request a userid/password to login. If you are publishing to your own local server, then chances are you will not be prompted for signon. At least that would be my initial guess...- SwinerBock

Jack, First off, the record lock problem should easily be avoided by using the (N) operation extender on all of your CHAIN's and READE's.
