Unfortunately AFAIK you can't set the resolution of the TGX/TGX+ cards from the command line. You have to set their resolution via the prom.
I can't remember the exact options but it involved something like typing the resolution in at the ok prompt. Googling for cgsix and resolution will...
If your YP server is broadcasting on the same subnet, then all you need to do is put your domain name into /etc/domainname and run /usr/etc/ypbind. Add these to you startup scripts etc....
There is undoubtedly an optimum buffer size but I doubt many will know it off the top of their head. It is however very easy to check; just time a run of different buffer sizes until you get the fastest.
