Past upgrade programs didn't require that you installed the previous program but that you possesed a copy. When the install looks for the previous windows to upgrade from, it will prompt you for a location. Just point it to the CD and insert the WinME into the CDROM drive and it should work...

Just checked with McAfee and Norton. A virus cannot cause physical damage to your hard drive. It can infect the CMOS though. I would trust people who deal with this stuff day in and day out before I would trust the nay sayers on this board.

Did you try to use my computer, right click on the a drive, then properties. There should be a space with "Label" and a blank area or the label of the floppy. No drop down menu.
