Hi anonim1
Just to confirm that i have this working on both an SBS site & Server 2003 standard site.
In the proxy setting of the Outlook client it MUST be the DNS name if you are going to attempt a connection from the internet.
If you are testing within you LAN then you must ensure you have...
My mistake was located in the "Exchange Server Name"
Tools>>Accounts>>ViewChange>>Change
Where is says: "Mirosoft Exchange Server:"
I had incorrectly entered mail.mydomain.com
The correct entry should have been
myserver.mydomain.local
Then under moresettings>>connection>>Exchange proxy...
Only a few minutes after I posted the above I had a thought.
I changed the exchange server name to the actual server name ie: server.domain.local
Previous to this I had the internet dNs name (same as what is in proxy settings ie: mail.domain.com
I then reread the ms article and noted that I...
I am sad to say that I came to this forum to find an answer to the exact same issue.
All the same steps , even payed for a REAL SSL certificate in desperation. no improvement. Just keep getting prompted for passwords.

You must ensure "Netbios over tcip/ip" is enabled on all machines.
This should fix any issues with Xp / 98 / 95 machines seeing each other when only using tcpip protocol.
It seems MS have disabled res:// & File:// when used in the "Internet Zone".
