I've thought about testing the processor in another board, but the computer stores all tell me they can't test a socket 7 and I don't know anyone that has a socket 7. I wanted to just get my money back on the chip and give up, but TigerDirect won't even consider it. So I guess I'm stuck.
The board is suppose to support 100 FSB. I went through 5 emails with the GIGABYTE tech concerning the problem, and he said the 550 processor should work. The IDT Winchip 2 200 MHz chip is a 66*3 3.5 volt chip. I was originally using a AMD K6-2 450 MHz chip (100*4.5 2.2 volt) when it quit...
I tried unplugging the computer and removing the battery for about 5 minutes, put the 550 chip back in and the computer's still dead. Put the 200 chip back in and it all works fine. I just can't figure it out. The AMD K6-2 550 doesn't HAVE to have an ATX power supply does it (I'm using an AT...
I don't have a jumper to clear the CMOS, but I have reset the bios to the default settings and rebooted. The chip does warm up after a moment so there's voltage there. I appreciate all the help everyone has given me, but I think I'm going to give up and go with a new, faster board and...
I haven't left the computer on long enough to warm up (only long enough to see if the hard drive starts or to see if I get a beep). I'm starting to think it must be another bad chip, but it's hard to believe TigerDirect would send out 2 bad chips in a row. I changed RAM and that didn't help...
Thanks for the reply. The CPU says 2.3 for the core voltage. I tried 2.2, 2.3, and 2.4. I also tried the lower speed settings and still the board acts like there's no processor installed. I'm stuck with the 550 MHz (no returns), but the first CPU I tried was a 500 and it didn't work either...
I upgraded from a Winchip 200 mhz to a AMD K6-2 550 mhz and the system does absolutely nothing. I've disconnected everything down to the power supply and AMD CPU and get no beeps at all, BUT - I also get no beeps using the Winchip (although everything works fine when everything's hooked up)...
