I have decided to just shelve the IBM drive - I have just bought a 60Gb Maxtor drive - which I installed yesterday with no problems. We'll just have to see Thanks- Waggadog

I used Drive Fitness Test and erased the boot sectors but after trying to install XP the machine just kept crashing as the drive was being accessed.- Waggadog

Had my IBM Deskstar die on me today - the bios just cannot boot from the drive- the machine just resets itself.I have tried erasing the boot sectors and low level formatting the drive but to no avail. I can however boot from another device (another hard disk or floppy) and use the hard disk...- Waggadog
