    What about anti-virus software? some include firewalls that run w/ default settings. Infact, what about XP's integrated firewall, do you have that running?

    chksk /r has fixed a lot of silly little problems for me.

    Try taking the decvices out and looking them over, you can usually find hints to who the manufacturer is.. then it's easy to find a web site w/ updated drivers.

    Right click 'my computer' go to device manager, and see if you can find your sound card and modem. Did you ever install their drivers?

    Look in device manager, is the computer not detecting them completely, or are they throwing errors? Try rearanging their slots, reboot, and see if windows picks up on them. If the computer's detecting them and they're just not working, try reinstalling or updating the drivers.

    Every time I have to install winXP on my home computer I get an insane amount of error messages for various different files during install. If I take the CD out and put it back in, eventually it will succeed in copying the file - only to error on another file a few minutes later. I've tried...
