    Yes, the PC should automatically detect the full amount of installed memory during boot up. That suggests that it may seem to fit fine, but most likely it is not seated properly on the board. What happens if you switch the two memory cards?

    OK, this may sound silly, but can you boot the machine when it is plugged into the AC outlet? Try that with the battery in, and again with the battery removed. It sure sounds like an electrical problem (dead battery, open connection, or a short). Seems unlikely to be a software problem.
