Forget gender, what about age bias in IT?

Rosie, Excellent point about age bias. Discrimination is not legal where I am, and age is no exception. I offer the flip-side of the age-bias 'coin'. I am a young female with only a handful of experience and a bachelor's degree. This in itself is not the problem - the biggest problem is...

    Experiences with RSI

Hi All, I just wanted to ask anybody who has ever suffered from repetitive strain injury as a result of working in IT / with computers to share their story. Clearly this problem requires help from a medical professional, but how was the problem dealt with? Did the solution work well for you...

Teen arrested in Blaster worm case

Excellent point skiflyer, although it was one I didn't think I needed to mention, being common sense.

Teen arrested in Blaster worm case

Naturally systems were patched as soon as the patch was available. It is not sensible to leave security holes in systems. Particularly when your systems are managed by a large international IT consulting company (not a good look for them, really).

Teen arrested in Blaster worm case

Interesting angle, clarkin, however I wanted to note that if there is a security hole, and people are made aware of it but there is no virus activity, people still run the risk of intrusion if they don't install a patch.... so, anybody who is security conscious or has reason to protect...

Linux or Windows. want to settle on one for my career but cant.

Hi pctechnician. Just out of curiosity, why not do both? What is stopping you from becoming skilled and/or certified in both. I imagine that would provide a fruitful career, as you would be versatile. Admittedly, this would require a fair bit of commitment on your part to get skilled up on...

Teen arrested in Blaster worm case

lionelhill I think you're right, and you have a good point. These people sit in our society and our economy and daydream about how great it would be do inflict such damage, but do you think if a serious virus hit their machine they'd be impressed with it's author, happy about the result, or...

Teen arrested in Blaster worm case

Perhaps slightly off-topic here, but would you believe that I once knew somebody who disliked what they called "globalisation" and "capitalism" and government so much that they used to often talk about "how cool it would be" to release viruses that do severe damage...

When do you stop giving advice?

I think I can understand Kjonnnn's point. Sometimes you write a question in a forum when you have looked up books and various online references, and Google just throws back "spaghetti". You may read the "answers" in such sources, and yet still make little sense of them, or...

    Document Sign-Off

Hi Everybody, I have a question for you all. I am involved in a project where my role is to compile a configuration plan for a new system, which is agreed upon by all other members in our daily workshops. It is almost time for the plan to be completed and 'signed off'. My question to you is...

Work and family - Is a balance possible?

I think something tha tneeds to be remembered bigpaullyndefan is that the generalisation of "a lot of IT professionals" is your opinion only.... and perhaps the opinion of others, but I certainly know very few IT professionals who dont care if they have lives or not. I find it to be...

    help using os.mkdir

Hi All, I'm trying to create a directory in my python script, the following is a snippet of some of my code: import shutil import os import copy import os.path import os.mkdir ..... for folder in wf: mkdir("C:/CorVuReports/" + folder) ..... Testing prior to adding...

    Butler in the Dashboard

Will the system dispense some sort of lolly / chocolate to me when I'm getting drowsy? A sugar fix will help! If so then that would be a great thing! But seriously, I agree this seems like an extremely distracting use of technology. If I want to hear my voice messages, read my email etc I'll...

    Gender bias in IT

Curiosity has gotten the better of me rexxxy - do you mean that the women called in sick more often than the men? If so how much more often and why was this a problem? I won't flame you for what you said, I suspect you are right. I've never had to work with a significant number of other women...

Row limit on queries to linked servers?

Hi All, Just wondering if you can help me out with a problem I'm having. I have created a linked server to a DB2 database. One query that I have been running returns a maximum of 234 rows, when I am expecting in excess of 3 million. The query seems ok to me, but my colleagues seem to think...

The Times They Are A Changing

Have you had the battery checked? When the CMOS battery is 'sick' you often see a system clock 'losing time'. If you leave it longer, does the clock lose more than an hour?

    Interviews make me nervous, help...

CajunCenturion is right. Being honest, and being yourself is imperative. Being a junior does not necessarily mean that you need all the right answers from a technical perspective - many people would prefer you to admit you don't know the answer to something or that you'd need help, rather than...

Is it ethical to quit your job when...

BJCooperIT - I have read some of your other posts - add those to this latest piece of information and all I can say is omigosh!!!. I agree, nobody tests in the production environment, and I too would have difficulty in complying. Non-supportive DBA's, naive and what sounds like hearing-impaired...

Is it ethical to quit your job when...

BJCooperIT - I too have read many of your posts and I also agree with the others who have posted in this thread. Management is responsible for factoring in the possibility of losing some of their staff, and you do not have a contract to the people. Also, if you feel a need to leave your...
