Try different a drivers from different sources; manufacture's site and from other places where enthusiast claimed that they have been successful installing the new sound driver. Remove the old drivers prior to installing new driver.

Must be a way in Windows 2000 Pro to open Add/Remove Programs without reformatting the hard drive.
