We have had numerous problems with one of our machines freezing up after MS Word is opened. (in Office 2002 (xp))
After trying several different "fixes" I finally got an answer. (I hope)

We are having the exact same problem although we have now noticed that Word even locks up when trying to just execute. We dont even get a chance to choose a drive.
Check "File Locatiions" settings in Word on the problem laptops. You do this by using TOOLS\OPTIONS\FILE LOCATIONS. It is possible that the default location where Word is trying to read and save is a network server that has a mapped drive.

This problem is with a Windows 2000 Server. It is a member server on my NT Domain. About a month after it was installed it suddenly started printing all the jobs that were ever printed on every printer installed on it. I had to manually delete the jobs from the queues. This did not occur again...
