when you say slow, how slow? xp rebuilds the registry everytime it starts, 98 and me did not do this so they may boot a little quicker. also it may be searching for network connections. there is a program called boot vis. it can check your boot process and sometimes speed it up a little, get it...
this could be several things so i will start with the simplest. do you use an antivirus and is it up to date? have you ran check disk, and defrag? you may have picked up spyware, download and run ad aware. post back and let us know. hope this helps.

if you did not choose to archive your files, the only way is a repair install.but,before you do this check your settings in outlook, sp1 resets a lot of xp settings to default.

if it is a winmodem (software),that may be the problem. sometimes xp and winmodems don't play well. you may need to upgrade to a better modem that uses hardware to connect. there are several available that support xp. or another choice is to go external. hope this helps.
do a search for the programs you are looking for, when found open the folder and find the icon, right click on it and choose "send to desktop as shortcut". or drag it to the start menu. hope this helps.
