What OS are you running? Try looking under Services to see whether there is any sort of webserver running.

I'm actually doing something similiar at the moment. From the research i did, it looks like its best to have an Exchange 5.5 running on an NT 4.0. Why would you want to do that? You can have your website root directory to be in any drive you want, but to install IIS, i think it is set to be installed wherever your root Windows directory is.
