Finally solved it. Not sure which action actually removed the drives but a System Restore initially failed to run (after the restart) BUT after running Adaware it worked and all is now well.
Thanks for all your help.
Andy
I've looked at the Microsoft site and tried to find them in regedit. No progress there. It won't let you use the drives for anything else. I'm literally stuck with about 23 useless network drives???
I checked the other posts but the registry details don't match.
HELP

Net use says that there are no network drives connected. But in "my compter" they are on every drive except A,B,C,D and are apparenty disconected. It won't delete them because it says they aren't there!!!!!!!!!!!

Had a machine crash (I suspect someone put their foot on a cable) as it booted. Reult was it created a set of network drives from G to Z and pointed them all at one folder on the server. When you try and get rid of them (and they appear for all users of the machine) it says "the network...

We have a HP laptop (New) and have just set it up with XP pro and Office and NAV etc. It has a DVD burner and has been used with Nero to burn DVD's. In fact no problems.
Then we put in a data dvd from one of the other machines at work and bang it restarts and restarts and restarts. The DVD is...
Thanks again for the ideas. We've got it working. The problem is still there though. It's a clash between the USB 1 and the USB 2 drivers or something. Currently told the system to treat everything as USB 1 and it's working. Recon we will stop at that.

I've got a group of about 15 identical XP Pro machines on the network. On one that has been detecting quite hapilly a 128 meg USB drive for months there has been (once) a digital camera plugged in. Now the USB drive will not work on that machine. On any of the other machines it is perfectly...
Have a problem on some 98 machines and it keeps happening. The browsers normally connect via a sattelite link and a router. However a new problem has cropped up. They stop connecting for no apparent reason and looking at the script at the bottom of the page they are looking for this thing...
There was no single special event. Some of the machines had recently had some security patches applied and some antivirus updates on others.
Does anyone know if this could be caused by excessive network traffic?

If the 98 machines have been talking to a server the network software should be installed. Pick the computer that you want to act as a server then in "my computer" right click on the "C" drive and share it {the full option is best)
Then use "network neighborhood" from the others to browse for...
Have a network with about 80 machines attached. This includes about 4 Win98 workgroups. One of these groups has developed a problem. When you open network neighborhood you get an empty window. (not even the "entire network" icon).
Other workgroups are fine. What is going on? Any ideas where to...
Running setup shouldn't do any harm. Get a boot disk from another 98 machine (control panel, add remove programs, startup disk). See if the startup disk detects the CD rom drive. If it does its a definite 98 problem.
However from experience I tend to go for the BIOS first. (reset defaults) Then...
Help_____I have about 100 machines including a fair number of 98 systems. Recently I seem to be getting more and more problems with Internet Explorer. The basic sign is that when it opens I get a message saying that there is a problem with the settings in the Content Adisor (or words to that...
Had a similar problem when going from 10Mbs to 100Mbs. Turned out to be a bad patch cable. Caused all sorts of garbage to fly around the system and generally prevented any attempts to do anything beyond basic logons. Can you slow the system back down to 10Mbs?

Sounds as if you have enough ram. The overheating idea is worth following up. I had a similar sounding problem when a ribon cable blocked the fan to the cpu. That type of problem can be hard to pick.
Alternatively the new ram could be behind it. Can you put your old ram back and see if the...
I tend to agree with the defrag idea but I have another thought that may help. One of our computers had the date set to June 2099 and Norton Antivirus installed. Then for some reason the system slowed down to the point where everything took forever. I'm not sure what fixed it but after removing...
