I would start by checking the traffic logs on the hardware firewall. Any decent firewall would have a web front end for configuration and also logging. See if any connections to that site from an internal test pc are being blocked.

Call it tomato.local You need the "dot something" for it to be a proper DNS domain, otherwise you're left with an old style NETBIOS domain (like NT4) which would cause all sorts of issues if you need to setup any transitive trusts.

You need to grant that account "Log on as a Service" rights through the Administrative Tools, Local Security Policy. It's found in the Local Policies/User Rights Assignments screen.

The screen saver timeout can be controlled through a GPO. We have ours set at the domain level(a new policy not the default domain policy). It's found at User Config\Admin Templates\Control Panel\Display

Are you seriously wanting to lockout idle accounts??? This would have the effect that you experienced earlier. Did you want the screen saver to kick in after 15 minutes instead?

You don't install the 2008 drivers on the server, you install the drivers for the client OS's. Install XP and Windows 7 drivers for all your models of printers and when the client connects it can download the correct version.

You are on the right track. Set the script to run(in the GPO) under the Computer Config as a Startup Script. It will run as the System account so no elevated rights are needed.

You can use a GPO to push a Machine start up script that would copy the new Hosts file to every machine, this would avoid the admin rights issues.

XP Compatibility mode and XP Mode are 2 different things...Install the app and Oracle onto the Virtual XP mode pc and run the app from there.
