Erm guys.. Hate to dare say it, but this argument is dead. xDSL is here and everyone will have 2meg to their home PC by 2004, and POP3 protocol will be consigned to where it belongs.

From the client machine, do a "telnet IPADDDRESSOFMAILSERVER 25"
See if you get a helo (sic) back.
If you do then, outlook (normal) should be cool.
If you don't get a helo back, then you have some kind of TCP connectivity or port 25 connectivity or...

Are you relying? Exchange 5.5 relays by default and thus your are probably on loads of 'black-hole' lists, and thus can't send mail. In the properties of the IMC, there'a double-negative you need check:- it's like "None of these following...
Your pain is far from uncommon!!
If you have hard disk fault tolerance that works, you can always re-mount your exchange database. Obviously, if your hard disks cannot be retrieved, you need to re-install everything. (and restore data from backup).
