Not sure if you figured this out. There is a file called services (winnt\system32\drivers\etc\services). Open this file and change the SMTP port to the port you want to change it to. Restart Exchange.

If you are trying to connect to an Exchange server on the LAN, I would try using the IP address rather than the host name. This eliminates any routing problems. I would also try the IMAP connection and see if you get the same problem.
