You can change the smsls.bat so that it checks for a specified criteria before continuing. try IFMEMBER from NTRESKIT to filter by group membership or something more elaborate using Windows Scripting to check if the machine is a server, for example.
I use this in my company and it works fine.
Install the SMS Installer from the SMS_Inst folder and open the IPF. Compile it and you'll have the EXE.
you'll notice that SMS Installer is extremely useful. You can create custom installers for your apps or repackage shelf apps.

You can change your discovery settings and disable logon discovery, for example. This will prevent the volatile machines from being discovered.
Note that the only way to discover clients with logon discovery off is using Logon Installation (Client install via login script) or Network Discovery...
