you can do this using the text functions (left and length) in combination with a couple of IF statements. If you are unfamiliar with functions, write back and I'll be more explicit!

What make is the drive? It'd probably be a good idea to visit the manufacturer's website and download a diagnostic utility to see what that tells you. I'm struggling to see how a motherboard failure would result in these drive problems. Or vice versa. But I'd echo Micker's thoughts on backing...

Have you looked in the BIOS to make sure the hard drive is being detected? That's where I'd start... Report back here what you can see in the BIOS.

Sadly, knoppix can't write ntfs. Yet. I'd never heard of BartPE but it looks like a very, very interesting thing! I was away this weekend so I haven't had a chance to see what it can do but even if it doesn't dig me out of this particular hole, I'm very glad to know of it's existence. Cheers...
