Have you got all the rights of an administrator ?
Are the shares accessable to domain users ?
I think its probably a policy problem.
Have you tried typing the name \\servername\sharename in the textbox instead of searching for it?

The two pc's are simply connected with a hub between them. Just 2 ip adressess in a workgroup. No server or VPN nor dailup connection. No DHCP. the tip you gave about net use I will install it we will see what happens
