I'm trying to trouble-shoot slow network access problems with our w2k server. When running nslookup, I get this message: "Can't find server name for address 192.168.1.202. Non-existent domain. Default servers are not available. Default Server: Unknown
Address: 192.168.1.202
An outside...
These messages displays in my Event Viewer:
The system failed to update and remove registration for the network adapter with settings:...(network settings listed correctly.)
...The reason for this failure is because the DNS server it sent the update request to timed out. The most likely cause...
That's right. If I re-boot, I don't get assigned an IP address. I run ipconfig /renew, then I get one. Or, if I delete my IP listing from DHCP on the server. DHCP doesn't release the last address my PC was assigned, nor does it assign my PC a new one.
I'm testing the DHCP settings on the server before I start using the feature company wide. I configured my PC for DHCP. When I shut down and restart my computer, the address assigned to my PC will not release. I have to run IPCONFIG /renew to get the IP assigned again, or delete my listing...
I installed w2k twice on my new hard drive, the second time over the first installation files. Now at startup, I get a menu asking me select which OS do I want and I get two choices, both for Windows 2000. How do I get rid of this startup screen?
But why couldn't I access the AD information on my primary DC if the second domain controller is not running? That means I can't work on it and work on the other server at the same time. The second server is not ready to be active yet and I don't want to lose administrative functions on the...
I'm installing a second server on the network that will be running SQL 2000. Since there are only two servers, I want to set it up as a domain server so the global catalog is backed up to this server from the primary server, along with the AD. When I was done congfiguring the second domain...
I am setting up two w2k servers. One is already in place and is the Domain server. The second server will have SQL on it and that will be its only purpose. Do I make the SQL server a domain server, or just a member server?
I'm also switching now from Novell to a w2k server, and the Microsoft way is annoying.
With the W2k users, I mapped h:\server\home\user and the user will only see that specific folder.
But all the Windows 98 users must be mapped h:\server\home. The w98 user will see all the home folders...
When adding the computers to a w2k server domain, a new domain profile is created on the PC. When the domain users were created on the workstations, were they given admin rights? If not, that will keep them from using the resources on the PC that were installed under a different profile. I'm...
I have a user with a MSWord problem. When she tries to use File, Open, from the menu, or Crtl-O, or the File Open icon, Word will shut down. She can open files from the drop-down menu under File, or she can open files from Windows Explorer. But the File, Open feature in Word will not work...
Server1 is long gone. It was just a regular computer. I've already changed it back to a W2k Pro workstation. I'll check out the link you provided. Thanks.
I initially set up a computer with w2k server and AD for testing on the LAN. It was called server1.companyname.com.
Since I was new to w2k servers, we hired a consultant and he set up a new server that we are now using. He set it up as FS1.companyname.com. So both servers were online at...
I've got something wrong in the login scripts syntax for the server because the network drives won't disconnect when logging off.
I've got
net use v: //server/folder \persistent:no
What's wrong with this syntax?

You hit the nail right on the head. My current manager has been the big hold up that kept me from learning newer technology by keeping us on such an old server for so long. I'm finishing up the w2k server conversion in the next two weeks. That will be a feather in my cap. I figure...
Thanks, that worked. Unfortunately, I didn't set up the server. A consultant did. I'm finding his mistakes as I learn more about how a w2k server works.
I configured DNS on the new w2k server so all Internet IP addresses resolve through it. The forward lookup zone has the Internet provider listed and everything works - except when I try to access the company website. The server is called fs1.companyname.com. The forward lookup zone is called...
I know someone in HR at another company who just emailed me some info. The STARTING salary information that this person has for a company the size of mine is $6000.00 more than I make now. And that's the just the starting salary. I think I need to make a change.
