Well, I have an M1 Mac, and as I understand things, BootCamp no longer works. I believe there might be a work around for the M1 Macs [https://machow2.com/windows-on-m1-mac/], but I've yet to try it. Years ago, I had an old MacBook, and when I tried dual booting the thing just hung up. It was way...
Thanks for the update. I'm sure it will come as a comfort to a lot of people on this forum. Sadly, the issue is no longer of concern to me. After having spent the past year getting three defective computers in a row from Dell, and having them hassle me big time about returns/refunds, I've given...
Hi all,
I'm beginning to be badgered by M$ to install Windoz 11. But, before I do that, I'd like to be sure that SK will still work. When Windoz 10 came out, I waited until M$ upgraded my spouse's computer to Win 10. Then, I tried installing SK on her computer. Once I managed that, then I felt...
Well, this is truly weird, and I'm not sure what happened. I seriously doubt that I can provide a coherent narrative of my SK adventures over the past couple of weeks. So, please bear with me.
First of all, as to the toolbar files. SK has multiple toolbars, there is the one in question for...

I got a new computer and have installed SK successfully...but for one thing. I can't get the tool bar settings to persist from one session to the next. That is, I set up the toolbar as pleases me, but the next time I boot up SK, it has reverted to default.
@James33 suggested...
Thanks, @Rich224422 for your input. I'm pretty sure I've been running SK 98 as an admin all this time. I certainly have to "bless" something by pushing a button each time I boot up.
I should have updated this thread sooner. I did continue having some issues through December and into the first...
Well, I spoke too soon. For one day, I was good to go, but then SK wouldn't load again. I'm not sure if Windoz did something in the interim or not. I suspect it did because my "Free Cell" stats had been set back to zero.
Again today, Windoz did an update while I was off at dinner. I tried...
Hi All,
FWIW, Windows 10 decided to update itself a week ago and my Sidekick no longer would boot up. Eventually, I did a complete uninstall and reinstall, and got SK working again. But, when I tried copying over my data, something went awry again. So, several more deletions/re-installations...
After a few months with no problems, I began having some problems getting SK98 to load on a computer running Win10. Presumably, M$ had issued an update that interfered in some way. I'd get the start-up screen and then SK would freeze. Sometimes I could shut down the SK processes and try again...
Well, I thought I'd put in my 2¢. I was panicked by the thought of losing my SideKick when Win10 began importuning me to update. But, one day, my spouse who has a computer of similar vintage to mine, also running Win7 Home Premium, decided to click on the Win10 upgrade (without bothering to...
Ok, and now back to the hijacked thread part. Like @DougSilver, I like the feature in the contacts folder that I can have a running log of notes about various calls and so forth. According to the Evernote Bible, you can do something similar by setting up your contacts in Evernote. I think there...
Sorry to hijack this thread back to the original topic. ;-)
So, I've still got a small problem, albeit a small one. Following @HenryW's directions, I did get SK98 up and running on Win 7 Home Premium. But I have a consistent problem every time I start the program. When I start SK, I get a...
Ok, the problem with the weird, random crossings out was because I had auto spell check on. Now it's off and I'm ok again. Whew!
Still having problems enforcing my font choices, but eventually, we'll get it sorted out I'm sure.
Thanks, @HenryW, your files seem to have solved my problem...mostly. I tried installing last night, and things were slow as molasses and I gave up. I rebooted this a.m. and tried again, and the installation went relatively smoothly. So, it would seem that one can indeed run SideKick 98 in Win 7...
Hi Jim,
Not so well. I tried the directions, which of course required me to try to remember some DOS commands ;-) , but I got the following message:
So, I did some dir commands to make sure both files were, indeed in the c:\windows\system32 directory. My recollection is that Windows isn't...
Ok, we have two new data points.
My new PC is running Windows 7 Home Premium. As I said, I'm not getting SK98 to install. I put it in compatibility mode for Win 95, ran as an admin, and no luck. I get a message telling me that my version of SK is incompatible with Win and that I should contact...
Ok, now that's off my chest, lets get on to the problem at hand. Like @IanMcKean, I have the installation program for SK98 and its associated patch. I told Win7 Home Premium that the programs were Win95 compatible and it refused to run them.
Then, I just copied my files over and tried to run...
@jimalex, the url you posted is indeed sketchy. While they use the name Starfish and Sidekick 98 on their page and use the SK98 icon, the program they are offering has nothing to do with SK. That program fiddles your system settings depending on where you are working. Likely it's also datamining...
