Think I found the answer to this question. If system has more than one user, then the user files (basically all files in documents & settings folder for each user) will be wiped. This happens regardless of vendor disk or original XP disk. Luckily, I was able to use an original XP disk and the...
Thanks linney. That's the route I'm going to take as soon as I find someone local with original XP disk.......vendor crap I have won't let me do a repair, only full install (past experience) that leaves some of my stuff in tact and wipes most. Used it twice now and never get the same results.
Yeah and the only helpful solution (to edit the registry) I can't even get to. I'm basically in a bind and need to reinstall, just didn't want to lose all my data, drivers, etc. I only know enough about operating systems to make me dangerous so I'm rather scared of climbing in too deep and...
Thanks TheOldMan346. Will gladly spend the $99 to rid myself of this sorry vendor disk. On another note, have you dealt the the problem of "WINDOWS32\CONFIG\SYSTEM corrupted or missing"? Am using WinXP Home and have had the problem twice in less than a year. Both times I had been...
Is there a way to reinstall XP, copying over the top of original install, to repair corrupted files without losing all of your data, applications, drivers, etc. I have done this many times with Win98. I know from experience that I can not accomplish this with my vendor recovery disk. Only...
Those having this problem, are you using a firewall such as Zone Alarm or Black Ice Defender???
Last night I had this problem for the second time in less than a year. The common ground for these two critical errors started first with Black Ice Defender. There were a series of Black Ice...
caitooo,
I did find how to log on to XP Home as administrator. During boot (before Windows loads) on the screen that shows your BIOS info and memory test, just start hitting the F8 key (fast). Keep trying till you get it just right. There is no prompt for you to do this, just do it. You...
I only use XP Home. No multi OS here either. The file is only several KB, therefore not consuming consideable resources. Bothers me that I can't boot to safe mode though, only diagnostic mode through >msconfig. I was told there is no true "administrator access" for XP home, only...
Yea, hitting F8 on startup does nothing. Just keeps booting to the Welcome screen. In fact, I had to reinstall XP the first of December and don't even remember seeing an option to set administrator password.
I can't boot into "safe mode" as administrator in XP Home, only Professional. In fact, the only near resemblance to safe mode is to restart in diagnostic mode through run >msconfig . Please advise if there is another way.
I even tried to use a Win98 boot disk to access the file before XP had a chance to load anything, but Win98 is Fat32 and I'm NTFS. File is apparently corrupted beyond approach. Wish MS could provide an answer to this problem.
Having problems deleting an incomplete mp3 file (download from WinMX). Every time, I get the message "Error Deleting File or Folder - file is being used by another person or application". Well, nobody else is using it so I move on the idea of another application. To solve that issue...
ddlink -- by the way, I have never used Win2000. It would appear though in the forums out there that the problems are definitely not OS related. Problems are with 98, 2000, ME and XP Home and Professional.
ddlink -- I honestly don't know what the error string is. I know that I have never had the infinite loop problem a lot of folks are having. Again, since I changed to "optimized defaults" on the motherboard and turned off the onboard sound everything has been stable (no crashs that...
3dmax------By all means I am not a "trained" tech or anything like that and I speak from learning the hard way. My understanding of "integrated" is your sound, video, fax, or ethernet being integrated on the motherboard. Also, I think integrated systems would come from...
3dmax:
I had my computer built by Cyberpower, however I specified all the components to be installed. In other words, not a "prepackaged" system. I wanted all non-integrated components but man I didn't want all these problems. Cyberpower techs are telling me they are not getting...
I am extremely discouraged with my purchase, but I feel like I have spent enough time on my problems to say that it's not XP and it's not the Geforce3. I think the problem is an overall new technology issue (i.e. DDR ram, AMD XP processor, Via chipsets, BIOS) working together. I started...
Well, to respond to that post. My experience with XP restore is no good and a waste of system resources. I have already tried to restore back to the QC final checkpoint. XP gave message that it could not restore back to that point. I tried later checkpoints with the same response. Finally...
