    How to interperet motherboard manual?

    It should state just how much memory is supported by the MB. SIMMs sockets are much smaler than the DRAM slots....but a MB that has both will have both types of them in the same general area. Definately an older board, maybe 3+ years old. Of the two, DRAM is much more efficient and much faster...

    Definately sounds like a software problem...try re-installing Win 98.

    Motherboard shot?

    It could be many things...from bad memory (RAM) to a faulty BIOS, and yes, a bad motherboard. Usually, though, the motherboard itself doesn't just go "bad" unless it is made to. Check the usual things associated with the MB, but if your getting a new one for him, thats the best bet yet.
