Thank you vacunita (phil) for your reply (good to hear from you again in a different area of Tek Tips).
You were quite correct. My error was in trying to close the <p> tag outside of, not inside the <a> tag. With the closing tags correctly sequenced, Mozilla and IE6 read the code as desired -...
I am a complete newcomer to HTML., attempting to teach myself how to put a simple website together.
The website will comprise of a main page and several sub-pages, with the means supplied of navigating freely between these.
To do this, I inserted "a href" tags such as this :-
<a...
Thanks johnrfsr.
You will see that I was having two problems getting scandisk to run.
This thread refers to just one of them - a machine which was working fine and then "decided" to report that it had insufficient memory to carry out the routine. An identical machine (hardware and software)...
Thank you johnrfsr. Above in this thread you will see that Vacunita suggested the MSCONFIG approach, and it works. However it is "fussy" and as you say one needs to remember carefully what was inhibited so it can be un-inhibited.
The easiest solution all round is to start up in SAFE MODE (hit...

is quite right to caution about the showing of hidden files and the risk to system functionality of any modification thereof. The inappropriate modification of hidden files can seriously harm your system.
I use Norton GOBack as a program to restore to "as was" any inadvertant or...
Thank you very much johnrfsr and edfair for your further posts in this thread.
Yes, I have now found the favorites folder at C:\Windows\Favorites after I selected the "show hidden files option"
The folder is described as a "Shell Favorite Folder". That I can easily now copy/save/transfer to...
Thank you Steve,
That all seems to work well. I found a forum which provides loads of information about Process Explorer. It is at
http://forum.sysinternals.com
It was through that forum I came to realise that versions after v11.11 are incompatible with Win 98SE. Several contributors reported...
Thank you very much, Lemon 13
I think that the doc+settings location is an XP feature and is not to be found in Win 98SE.
However your alternative suggestion of IE6-file-dropdown menu-import/export solved the problem. This enables a favorites file of extension .htm to be copied (exported) to a...
As a result of further research and access to another forum, I have discovered that the latest version of Process Explorer which works with Win 98SE is v11.11. This despite later versions being described as 98SE compatible.
For some rather odd reason, the official PE site only offers downloads...
I am running IE6 under Win98SE with all available updates to both.
I would like to be able to transfer my Favorites list (ie. all the commonly used internet addresses) to other machines.
Does anyone know please in which file it is located, and therefore if the list can be transferred by just...
Further to the previous post, I am now back from NZ.
I have downloaded and unzipped Process Explorer v11.33 (which seems to be the latest). The resulting exe is procexp.exe.
However, when I try to run it, nothing appears to happen. The hourglass appears for about 30 secs., that's all...
Further to my post above :
Now back from NZ. walkabout, I have downloaded process explorer latest version (11.33) and have converted the zip file to its exe (procexp.exe). However, upon trying to run this, nothing happens. Initially I get the "hour glass" for about 30 secs., then nothing more...
to cobolkid (Steve),
Many thanks for this further useful tip.
I am currently on walkabout in New Zealand, but will download and evaluate your suggestion when I get back home. It looks and sounds VERY helpful.
Will post a comment idc. when I have tried it on the home machine.
Thanks again for...
It's a lot of work for possibly little gain, but you could try formatting a spare HDD, FAT32. Check it's bootable to the DOS prompt. Now copy everything over from the "problem" drive to the newly formatted one, and then see if it boots and runs ok. Now try SCANDISK..."
This suggestion from...
Thank you VERY much "TouchToneTommy" for this suggestion. This is a really useful and neat little system addition. Would that it had been part of the original OS.
The combination of Vacunita's suggestion of running in Safe Mode and then using the Icon Restore feature to rectify the mess which...
In common with so many other Win98SE users, I have continually suffered from this problem of hang-up at shutdown. A solution is to watch the hard disk activity light (if you have one). If you get to the page which says "Windows is shutting down" but the hard disk lamp goes out for more than 15...
Thank you vacunita for such a prompt response.
The problem I find every time I run up Windows in safe mode is that the whole of the layout of my desktop (ie, arrangement of all the icons in a tidy fashion) gets messed up. It is then necesary to spend quite a lot of time sorting it all out...
This post to report problem solved. For some reason when attempting to install the viewer from control panel / add-remove programs / Windows Set-up the system asked for the 98SE cd to be inserted but failed to locate upon it the 2 above listed files and the installation failed.
However today I...
I run IE6 under Win98SE having taken all the available updates available for both at the Microsoft update internet site. By and large it gives no problems, although occasionally certain sites do cause the program to freeze. As mentioned above in this thread, at one stage e-bay UK caused this...
Certain programs, such as Norton Disc Doctor, require that no other background programs are running (or else they tend continually to re-start due to disc write).
Background programs can be closed down somewhat laboriously by Control-Alt-Delete and selecting a program to end. This has to be...
