    I have an answer to this: if anyone else was wondering ... 1) remove stroke from rectangles 2) group the rectangles 3) in Appearances, add a stroke to the group 4) drag the stroke below the content in Appearances OR with the stroke selected in Appearances, Effects/Pathfinder/Add Mark.
