@smah
Worked like a charm. It seems that EVERY time I have run into a technical problem, Tek-Tips has responded with a cogent solution. If only we could promote this board more on the net.
Thanks again,
Bob

After running a registry cleaner (System Mechanic), I noticed that one of the folders in Outlook Express could not be opened. With the name of the folder still in the folder list, when I tried to open the folder, the screen would shake but the folder would not open...
@vacunita
There is no option for partitioning. GUI in Disk Management indicates drive as active and that there is only 1 primary partition. I tried to change settings to indicate free space but none is indicated in spite of the fact that there is almost nothing on the disk with 99% of disk...
@linney
The drive is recognized by XP. I do not want to reformat the drive. What I want to do is make two partitions and then load the contents and operating systems of two separate hard drives onto the USB 750 GB drive for backup. I plan to use Acronis True Image to mirror each of the HDD's...
I am trying to partition an external drive that is linked up to an old computer via USB 1.0. OS is XP Home.
Norton Partition magic 8.0 indicates that it will not support operations that are executed in boot mode.
Is there a work around for this? If not, is there an alternative product that...
I've been looking at two software hard drive backup programs: True Image 11 Home by Acronis (recommended by Computer Power User Mag.) and Perfect Image Professional by Avanquest. As would be expected, both manufacturers tout their products as superior to all others. I've not been able to...
System is as follows: Windows XP-Pro, SP2; Zone Alarm Pro ver. 7.0.337.000.
I got a good deal on a 3 user license for Norton Antivirus 2007. After I installed it, my system started crashing, Norton wouln't load, MS word would not launch, and the entire system would crash.
I am receiving...
@linney
Many a time you have been very helpful in solving some of my rather bizzarre problems and I do thank you for your suggestions. Unfortunately, nothing that makes any sense solved this problem. But, it was solved, rather unintelligently. Here's what I did.
I changed security center's...
@linney
There are no options in the security folder that will turn off the alert. I will look in the systems tools folder to try launching without "add ons". Thanks for the suggestion.
If I can't turn it off that way, I'll go back to IE6. BTW, the only obvious feature I see in IE7 is the...
I've been avoiding Microsoft Windows updates and alerts for some time by turning off the automatic updates option and have been able to remain secure by using other software means (i.e., proprietary patches). However, I decided recently (unfortunately) to download some security updates from...
@CiscoGuy33
I uninstalled using uninstall utility. Seems to work. If it reverts back, I'll reply to this post. Otherwise, thank so much you for your help.

I don't have enough fingers and toes to count the number of times that I have had problems with Symantec products. So, here's one more problem:
I installed Norton Antivirus 2006 over 2005. It worked o.k. for about a month and then I received a message that my subscription was expired...
@Garebo
I'm familiar with Videolan. I've not installed it but did download it. Reading the info about the codec, it is not as inclusive as I would like.
Sure, I could download various substitute players for each application. But, I'm not inclined to load up my hard drive with so much...
@BadBigBen
Media Player Classic is a good codec and a fine substitute for q-time. Do you happen to know of a substitute codec that will handle BOTH q-time AND realplayer?
@garebo
I perused the Quicktime manual you suggested. I find it interesting that there is almost nothing in the entire manual that helps the user to diminish the use of the player. The very last page of the manual discusses the use of scripts to control the program. So, if you REALLY want to...
It's unlikely that my problem involves worms, trojans, virus', or adware. I'm running AdAwareSEPro, Spysweeper, ZoneAlarm Pro, and Norton Antivirus. And that's on top of the Windows XP standard stuff........which isn't much to speak of. Also, I keep up with all the windows security patches...
@garebo
I cannot confirm this, but I strongly believe that Quicktime has some type of malicious code that is designed to deliberatley do this kind of stuff. BTW, I also attempted to render this devil inert via omitting it from startup. No-good. It re-insterts itself. This type of behavior...
@BadBigBen and garebo,
I'm sure it is Quicktime. I have a dual boot system and none of this occurs on the other drive..........because I don't have Quicktime on that drive.
I'm going to Deinstall Quicktime as instructed. BTW, I ran into a good video substitute for Quicktime: Power DVD...
One more question:
Why did Quick Time only begin to act up when new hardware was installed? Prior to the new installation, it pretty much didn't launch unless I deliberatly did so. Is it possible that the firmware burnt onto the drive breadboard is programmed to launch quicktime? If that's...
