Stupid question maybe, but, the PCI slots in my DL380 and 360's G1-3 do not have the same pin form factor as any of my desktop PCI cards. I was going to install a Swann DVR card, but NOOO . . .
So what does work in these slots?
I did purchase a couple aftermarket PCI USB cards for $5 each plus shipping, and successfully installed one in a DL360 G1. However, I have never tried to boot, nor install from the add-on USB card. But the cards do install easily, and the USB ports work.
I have been installing Debian Linux on recycled DL360's and DL380's. I do not find the SmartStart disk useful. Rather I set up the drives & RAID through the ROM menus. Make sure the machine is set to boot from CD. Then put in the Debian Linux CD one and they (DL360 G1 and G2) do POST and...
I thought it was the drive, but I bought another on eBay and both: when I push the eject button on the tray door they click four times and do not open. Compaq Part No314933-637.
I have tried using the eject command in the "my computer" connected drives (CD is recognized as present and says...
My DL380 G2 indicates that any drive I place in that slot has failed. But those same failed drives work before and after on a different machine. I believe Slot 1 is defective. Some manual said to always fill the slots in order. I think I would be best off disabling the bad slot. Can that be...
It works pretty much the same in Debian Linux: Left Click on Desktop, select Preferences, select Screen Resolution. Of course I had to interpret garbled text and guestimate icons until I found the right one. Adjusting down one notch fixed the display. So I could connect and respond from the...
I succcessfully installed Linux on a DL360 (gen 1, pre-gen 2). Everything worked well and smoothly except that I have wavy lines distortion on the right side of the screen. I had the same issue 7-8 months ago on a DL380, and this post ended the discussion:
"Wavy right side of screen

I have drive trays, and I have drives. They came with just a couple screws, but need 4 each. These are the black drives with the maroon button on the left to unlatch and then pull the lever to remove. CPQ/HP used these in 9, 18, 36, 72 Gig drives. Where do I get the screws?
Thanks, that worked. One little pry in the right direction and it was off. RAM installed, powered on to banner, RAM check 2, cpu's. Then it shut down due to power supply one fan failure.
It is an early G1, thus I descrbed it as G0. It has two recessed silver buttons, one on each side about 2/3rds toward the rear, with raised bumps and a sticker with an arrow pointing down then up.
I got a DL360 G0, dual 800 mhz., delivered today. I hooked it up and powered it on. No display. I checked he eBay item descrription and it was shipped with no RAM or drives. OK, I have those. But I cannot get the cover to come off. The sticker seems to indicate press then release the...
It does the same thing using either of CRT monitor 10 yrs old, or a Dell flat panel 1 year old. Each monitor has its own cable. The same thing happens with a KVM, as direct connection of cables.
This wavyness only starts after POST, cpu, memory initialization, and drives complete.
The G2, with...
I have 2 DL380's: a Gen 1 and Gen 2. Linux is installed on both. Display is fine for G2. Compaq Proliant banner and POST display OK on G1, but when the Linux desktop loads, the left 1/3 of screen is OK but the right 2/3 is a wavy transposed image that is not readable. 2 different monitor give...
Eureka! I have found my problem. All SmartStart CD copies given to me, and all I created, were not bootable due to my CD drives' inability to make real ISO copies. I downloaded freeware, ImageBurn, or something like that. It told me that the CD spindle I got at Fry's was all junk. I bought...
Thanks for the cross thread posts - they helped a lot!
Getting back to this now, with floppy available. Made a system erase floppy from HP/CPQ. Ran it, put in Smart start = disk error.
G2 Power on, Compaq Proliant banner, memory and CPU's OK, Smart Array 5i recognizes drives; defined RAID 1...
Wow! Thanks. I just pasted that into a Word.doc for reference. I am waiting for a retro SmartStart cd (3.9). I also got a spare cd-rom with the correct part number. I will post an update as a new thread soon. Thanks. EWF
Yes, I am looking there. It lists "newish" documents. As an example, below is the complete contents of S.I.A:
"Setup and install - administrator
Title Date posted Format Size (MB) Estimated download time
Implementing Microsoft Windows Server 2003 with Service Pack 1 on ProLiant servers...
Thanks, that link takes me to utility to download recent articles, SmartStart 7.something, but not the original install & setup. I want to downlod the manual that shipped with the G2 when it was new (2002)
