trim is not a key word on interbase. but there is LTRIM AND RTRIM witch are external functions, but you need to declare them in your Data base. unfortunately i don't have the interbase now, but you can see the help. after declaring them you can use them freely.

i think you must determine a suitable character set for your data like ISO8859_1 for european language like french .
