It's not best practice anymore. And as a writer that's had to go through hundreds of pages of documentation and REMOVE the extra space after a period, since that was the rule of the styleguide, I'm begging you - STOP.
when you right-click the grey box, what do you get for the file name when you open "Object Properties"?
And have you tried printing (to PDF or paper) with the grey boxes and see if you get the graphics?
You may have better results if you import the graphics by reference rather than embedding...
Not at the paragraph tag level you can't. You may be able to do something with the Reference Pages, but if I had to kludge something together, I'd just draw a graphic box, shade it and put it behind the paragraph. Or put the paragraph you want highlighted in a non-ruled table cell and shade that.
