Try "tar cvf /dev/rmt/0 ." while in high level directory you want to tar. If you want to put the tar log to a file for review add " > /directory/filename" to the end of the command. Your tape might not be rmt/0 so substitute with the apropriate device.

I just checked the "Sun Hardware Compatability List" for Solaris 2.6 and the Compaq Proliant 1600 is not on the list. Could have something to do with the problem you are experencing. Just a guess!

Try Crucial's european site - www.crucial.com/uk -. I think it's the best memory you can buy for the money. I don't know how competitive the price is in the UK but in the US the price is very reasonable.
