After trying several tips and suggestions from the internet, I finally read my question again and took my own advice. I removed the 3-Com card, installed a generic PCI nic, installed the drivers that came with the card and was up and operating in a short time.
I performed a hardware upgrade to a PIII pci motherboard and replaced the nic with a 3C905B Tx-NM card. The system seems to be able to identify the card and the card settings but fails on initialization.
The message in the hardware section of the boot process is:
