I believe IE 7 has all critrical updates. The version number is 7.0.5730.11. I assume this number defines its update status.
I'm not using any custom themes, nor "Windows Blinds".
I've seen IE7 and uxtheme.dll in the error messages a number of times.
I assume that these error messages are...
Rick,
Thanks for the info re double clicking on the error entry to see what was doing the hanging. I was not aware of that capability.
I did do this, and noted that there were different items which were noted. I will go through the error items, and make up a list, to see what's what.
If there...
This whole area is a new one to me. So please excuse me if I ask any "dumb" questions about this topic.
When I get the error messages, I can continue the shutdown by either clicking in the message, or doing nothing - which shortly just dismisses the message, and shutdown continues.
I ran...
Linney,
I went to the MS site, and had MS check my install of XP Pro.
Both the "Security", and "high priority" updates were searched, and I was advised that I have them all.
I did see at some updates that I'll call oddball or very special, that I would have no interest in. So, I'm satisfied...
I noticed that both Spyware Doctor and AVG were doing email scanning on my outgoing email. I certainly don't need 2 programs doing that, as stuff that I send out should be very clean & safe. So I disabled SD's outbound scanning, and sent off an HTML to my friend. This time it went through just...
Hi Ben & Rick,
Thanks for the tips.
One thing is not clear. At the present time, I occasionally get a message box during shut down, about something being open/running, and in the message box is an "End Now" button, which I click on. Sometimes another message comes up and says "program not...
Hi Greg,
Thanks for your reply. Until I find out what's going on, I'll just send to him in plain text.
I've sent off a new HTML message to him, with Spyware Doctor's outbound scan turned off. And I'll see if this makes any difference.
There is a remote possiblility of the servers involved...
Greg,
I copied a bunch of the stuff - see below. I see that Spyware Doctor is also checking e-mail. This may be overkill, and part of the problem. But this one recipient is the only one having this problem.
I'm enclosing just a part of the mess, as the whole thing is probably too long to be...
Hi Linney,
I'm using MS's auto updates for my system. And I assume that among all the updates I continue to get that those for OE are in there. that's why I noted my version # for OE which is 6.00.2900.2180.
I'm not using XP for my security stuff. I use AVG, Zone Alarm, Spyware Doctor, and...
I can readily check to see what's running before I shut down. I use WinPatrol, and like msconfig, stuff that is running will show. But stuff running in the background, like all the stuff in my Startup folder, doesn't necessarily make its presence known in a list of "running" items, and certainly...
Every so often, I experience some strange happenings in Outlook Express 6.00.2900.2180
I normally work in Rich Text(HTML) mode, and I use some background stationery, and an MS font "Comic Sans MS".
I always send and reply in HTML.
Once in a very great while, I'll get a message from someone...
I periodically get this error message, when I'm shutting down XP Pro
unknown software exception (0x0eedfade) occured in the application at location 0x7c82a5b
I Googled this, and see that others have also had it, but I'm unsure of what's causing it, or what, if anything, to do about it...
Thanks Linney.
I had already installed the trial version.
It is indeed a superb program. Filequest and PowerDesk have been acting crazy, there is no support, and they are both now history.
Bocaire
In all my years of computing, I've always found much better file managers than Windows Explorer. Too bad that MS kept it as such a minimal program.
In past years, PowerDesk and Filequest XP Gold did a reasonable job. But both are aging, and appear to be no longer supported. PowerDesk has been...
Thanks for the info.
That checkbox was not checked. But suddenly the situation has reverted to what it was a few days ago when I first selected the larger size - it now appears to be sticky again, at least in a given boot session of XP Pro.
Shutting down IE7 and reloading - it stays sticky...
IE7 has an option to change the text size via VIEW>TEXT SIZE. I prefer the "LARGER" size, and select that.
But apparently that setting is not "Sticky", and the next IE7 session, it's back to "MEDIUM".
Is there any way to change that setting so it will stay "sticky" where I have selected it...
Hi Linney,
I've managed to resolve one of the issues that bothered me with IE7.
When I'm in Google news, I was trying to use the ZOOM feature to give me larger and easier to read text. But setting ZOOM at 125% ended up giving me the scroll bar at the bottom of the page, and I had to scroll...
Hi Linney,
I have considerable security software running. Disabling it would probably allow MS to set its security items as the defaults where there are "conflicts", and I feel quite strongly that I don't want that.
Re your earlier comment about "IE7 updates" just now there was an auto MS...
Hi Linney,
Thanks for the reply.
I do not have the toolbars locked. There is no check next to that item in the VIEW>TOOLBARS menu listing.
There must be something somewhere that's causing this.
I find it hard to understand why/how MS can do such a "far from perfect" job for IE7. I'm...
I finally decided to let MS do the upgrade install to IE7, on my primary high end computer.
Things went OK, and being an advanced user, I got most things "straightened out" shortly after the install.
There are however, a couple of items that I can't resolve, so I'd like some tips here. I'm...
