    dimension line wrapping

Another star from me. I've had a response from cognos support that this request has 2 enhancement requests against it. Saves me having to wait plus I've now got some happy users.

    Help published IWR error #3940

Have you tried re-bootig the server. I had a similar problem when the tnsnames file for our Oracle db was moved onto the server , everythin else worked ok including Impromptu but I had to re-boot before IWR would work. Regards John

    Catalog - Internal numbers (dangers)

What will happen to any reports written using the 'originally' changed catalog if tables are removed and re-added to pick up definition changes. Will they still work correctly if the underlying field names haven't changed? or do they use internally generated field id's?

    Virtual Cube Possible?

I agree with Scott on this one. I think the reasoning behind the Time Segments is that the historical ones don't change whereas cubes based on customers will. This new option will require some thought if dimensions change and this needs to be propogated across history as this will mean...

    Virtual Cube Possible?

This exact scenario is covered in the latest edition of Supportlink using the new Time-Segmented option in Cognos Series 7 Version 2. I'm sure it's also covered in the Transformer Help as well. This ability also allows for the tracking of data in slowly changing dimensions if the old cubes...

    Series 7 Version 2 & Netscape compatability

I don't know about you guys but it sure gives me a nice warm feeling inside to have so much expertise at hand to answer these sorts of questions. It's one thing to have the doco saying things but there is nothing like having real world experiences to draw on. Great work guys. John

    Series 7 Version 2 & Netscape compatability

I think the versioning that Cognos is using is going to cause problems like this. As I understand it (I haven't yet gone down the Series 7 path yet) is that MR2 is 7.0 and does support NDS. 7.1 is VERSION 2 and does not support NDS as per page 90 of the Installation guide ebi_inst.pdf. Upgrading...

Cognos Version 6 and Oracle 9i

Thanks for your response Graham. Are you still using the 8 client or have you upgarded to 9? Regards John

Cognos Version 6 and Oracle 9i

My DW guys want to upgrade to Oracle 9.2.0.3. We are still on version 6 and I know that even 7.1 doesn't support the version of Oracle they want to go to but I was wondering if anyone has tried to run version 6 against an Oracle 9i database using an 8.1.7 client? I did a small trial on a 9i db...

    Cognos Series 7.1

I've noticed that 7.1 no longer supports Netscape Directory Server only Sun ONE and ADS. To upgrade from 6 I'm going to have to go to Series 7 and then to 7.1 and somewhere along the line either go to ADS or Sun ONE. Looks like FUN !!! John

    Disk Configurations

Hi Fazil, None of our users have direct access to the servers, there are only a few of us who develop cubes. We have 2 distinct areas of reports, production reports which I am responsible for, and general reports written by the users. We will 'productionize' reports written by users and maintain...

    Disk Configurations

Hi Fazil, We have a similar setup on our servers which, I believe, were set up by Cognos for us, this may be their way of doing things. We too are about to convert our servers to W2K and intend installing the Cognos Software on the C: drive as normal. I can't see any problems with this, the...

    Catalog Analysis

Happy New Year, Dave, I don't think indices can be created on a materialized view which is one of the drawbacks. We had 2 of our main dimensional tables based on them but we've been doing some work on them to improve the responsiveness and one has been changed back to a 'normal' table. John

    Catalog Analysis

We've looked at Architect but had trouble pulling in our catalogs as we use Oracle Materialised Views, also we have nested folders in our catalog structure and I understand that Architect can't display them easily. I've downloaded the DocuVision product and I'll have a look at it after Christmas...

    Catalog Analysis

I had a look at I-Assistant but didn't have enough time to evaluate it properly, I also didn't like EVALUATION scattered about either. I noticed a new product called DocuVisn by Envisn Information Systems that is supposed to document Impromptu catalogs, Impromptu reports, PowerPlay cubes and...

    Saving .mdl

Try doing a 'clean house' with a future date. This should remove all categories, take care if you have manually added categories, it will remove them as well. John

    Impromptu Catalog Structure

I agree with CognosProfessional, it depends on who is using the catalog. We have the data separated into folders by subject area and within that folder separate the facts from the dimensions. We go another step, as we have multiple subject areas we have common dimensions in a separate folder...

    Customer Category Problem!

I agree totally with bsellick in that the cube looks like it is going into too much detail, as I mentioned when you have large numbers of categories in a dimension it takes a long time to browse using the dimension viewer. Normally I would have all of the dimensions sourced from individual...

    Customer Category Problem!

Hi, I've had exactly the same set up on a couple of cubes I've 'inherited', although they hadn't reached the magical 65531 limit the model sizes were over 180mb. The solution is to build the customer dimension values in the transaction data source and not bother with the link in Transformer. It...
