Did you ever find a solution to this? I am in the same situation and if all else fails will write a script/applet to run at user logoff which will force the registry to default to the domain. I'd rather not do this because this complicates what should be a simple issue.

Check the following registry value:
KEY: HKLM\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Windows NT\CurrentVersion\Winlogon
NAME: GinaDLL
Change from NWGINA.DLL to MSGINA.DLL if necessary.
Then add the follwing string value to HKLM\SOFTWARE\Novell\Network Provider\Initial Login
NAME: Login When NWGina Not Loaded...
