try creating a new set of XP install boot floppies (6 diskettes) from this page http://www.bootdisk.com/original.htm & see if you can boot from those to run an XP
I noticed you have home edition some home editions(HP_pavilions) have xp installed on a hidden partition and does not come with the cd's to reinstall make sure you have them before formatting and using the fdisk option. if you do the article mentioned will work for you.

I would uninstall mcafee and try downloading a demo of norton2002 I just ran into basicly the same prob. and found that my mcafee had been disabled by the virus and wasn't doing anything .norton removed the virus and I got the computer back up and running , I'm not claming one to be better than...
Best bet is to go to add/remove software from control panel remove software that is giving you prob. then find the folder usuly c:\windows\program files then delete folder . re boot then reinstall the one you wish to use.. may or may not work worth a try.
